Basement Flooring Choices

Whole Home Remodeling Contractor in Long Island, New York

When selecting a flooring choice for your basement it’s important to remember a few things first.  These points will help you eliminate some potential “bad choices”.   Homeowners should remember that basements are humid by nature, moisture is almost always a guarantee moreso at certain times of the year or during specific weather.

Some flooring choices should never be used below grade and these include hardwood, bamboo, and cork floors are a bad choice because they soak up moisture.  Being organic these materials can also bring on mold growth and rot which is a repair you never want to have to do.

Basement Ceramic Tiles and Stone.Ceramic Tile & Stone: Is a great choice. Ceramic tiles and stone are both very durable and can last a lifetime in your home.  There is a certain sense of luxuriousness that these flooring materials exude and often remind homeowners of the luxurious bathrooms you’d find in a 4 or 5 star hotel.  Ceramic Tile and Stone are great for bathrooms because they are impervious to water damage.  Water and moisture will have almost zero effect om the floor if it’s been laid down correctly.  The downside is that ceramic tiles and stone can be one of the most expensive ways to floor your basement.

Carpeting your Basement.

Carpet: If inorganic materials are chosen then carpet can be a great choice  for your basement. It is comfortable, cozy and warm. It offers a safe playing area for children protecting them from bumps and bruises if they fall or horse around in the room. If your basement ever gets flooded the carpet will need to be replaced and living on Long Island this is a possibility. Carpet can be the lowest cost option. Many homeowners find great deals on
remnants and instock carpeting.

Vinyl Plank FlooringVinyl Plank Flooring:  Relatively new- vinyl plank flooring is very similar to floating engineered floors. The difference being that vinyl plank flooring is made completely of vinyl. It is not affected by humidity or moisture and it will never rot or swell. It is very durable and easy to maintain and will add value to your home.  If you don’t quite have the budget for ceramic tiles or stone than vinyl plank flooring is a great choice.
